Despite the current uproar over the funding of a U.N.-backed court, the stage seems to be set for the Hizbullah-dominated government of Prime Minister Najib Mikati to pay Lebanon's share to the tribunal without this move causing any major split in the cabinet. The Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), which is trying to uncover the killers of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and 22 others on Feb. 14, 2005, is a major bone of contention between the Hizbullah-led March 8 alliance and the Western-backed opposition March 14 coalition. While the March14 coalition, led by former Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri's Future Movement supports the STL as the best means to reveal the truth in Hariri's assassination, Hizbullah and its March 8 allies dismiss the tribunal as "an American-Israeli court" designed to incite sectarian strife and target the resistance group.
